Horizon Europe project DIAMOND webinar: “The past and future of scenarios in the IPCC”

Scenarios of future greenhouse gas emissions are central to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment process, shaping our understanding of mitigation challenges and informing global climate policy. Over time, however, questions have emerged about how key assumptions—such as those related to policy and technology change, socioeconomic developments, and feasibility—have steered the evolution of emissions pathways across successive IPCC reports. At the same time, the range of scenarios assessed tends to reflect a relatively narrow set of modelling approaches and shared frameworks, limiting the diversity of perspectives and possibilities considered.

Th**e EU Horizon Europe project DIAMOND is organising a webinar on “The past and future of scenarios in the IPCC” on Tuesday, 17 June 2025, 15:00 – 16:00 CEST**. This webinar is intended for researchers engaged in climate scenario development and assessment, especially those working with integrated assessment models (IAMs), energy-economy models, and broader scenario exercises. It will provide a space to reflect on how scenarios have developed over time, explore opportunities to expand the modelling and scenario landscape, and consider how a more inclusive and pluralistic approach could enrich future assessments.

Agenda

  • Welcome (10 min)
  • Energy and socioeconomic system transformation through a decade of IPCC-assessed scenarios – Dr. Dirk-Jan Van de Ven, BC3 Basque Centre for Climate Change (10 min)
  • The next generation of scenarios – Dr. Glen Peters, CICERO Center for International Climate Research (10 min)
  • Discussion (30 min) – Discussants: - Prof. Jessica Jewell, Chalmers University & University of Bergen - Dr. David McCollum, University of Tennessee
