John WEYANT

During the Eleventh IAMC Annual Meeting held last 13-15 November 2018 in Seville, Spain, the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium was proud to honour John Weyant (Stanford University) with the IAMC Lifetime Achievement AwardJohn Weyant has played a critically important role in the development of the Integrated Assessment Modelling research community. John created the model intercomparison form as we know it today through the Stanford Energy Modeling Forum (EMF). EMF and the model intercomparison method have driven the community forward on energy and climate policy research. John also has been the organizer of the Snowmass workshops – the place where the community gathers for two weeks of intense progress, planning, and creativity every year. One of the Snowmass outcomes is actually the Integrated Assessment Modelling Consortium (IAMC). After being one of the founding fathers, John now is the first and so-far only chair of the IAMC’s Scientific Steering Committee. Many people see John Weyant as the world’s expert on integrated assessment and energy models. And since John does not have his own modeling team, he is viewed as an unbiased authority both within and outside the community. In fact, within the integrated assessment community, John has played a uniquely important role. He possesses a wide and deep knowledge of all relevant issues. Moreover, John has an amazing ability to convene the right experts on different topics – leading to scientific and policy-relevant discussion that brings the community and the policy world together and moves discourse forward. Always this is done by creating a fully collaborative atmosphere, where everyone can contribute – government leaders, NGOs, bankers, lawyers, professors, IAM researchers and students. In other words, we simply could not think of a more suitable person to receive the first IAMC Lifetime Achievement Award than John Weyant.
