UN Climate Change Annual Report 2020

2020 proved to be an immensely challenging year. As the COVID-19 pandemic continued to unfold, all United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) processes continued to move forward in 2020, albeit in virtual mode. The secretariat continued to support Parties in developing their medium- and long-term commitments to zero greenhouse gas emissions and in assessing the impact of national climate responses.
Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, states in the foreword of the report: “As the annual report shows: despite the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, 2020 was not a lost year, with important work continuing
virtually to lay the groundwork for a successful United Nations Climate Change Conference COP26 in November in Glasgow.”

The year 2020 was also going to be decisive in accelerating efforts to put a stop to humanity’s uncontrolled interference with the planet’s climate system. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted and slowed these efforts. Despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic, new, remote ways of working and collaborating helped the secretariat to continue working closely with Parties, and many UNFCCC processes went forward as planned.
The scientific community continues to call for urgent action. Climate action cannot be ignored while we grapple with the more immediate threat of the pandemic. Climate action and the green economy must be at the centre of the COVID-19 recovery.

UN Climate Change Annual Report 2020 analises the more compelling aspects regarding climate change. It evaluates the adaptation policies adopted, as well as sets new higher ambitions to look ahead. This report encompasses the key achievements under the UNFCCC intergovernmental process and the activities of the secretariat in 2020, particularly the impacts of those activities in support of the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.
