Brazil has taken a significant step forward in its climate action by updating its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Announced on November 13th, the new NDC outlines ambitious targets for 2035 and charts a path toward the nation’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.
A noteworthy element of this announcement is the reliance on the BLUES model, and the new NDC explicitly acknowledges that on different parts of its main text, showing the trust of the Brazilian Government on IAMs. BLUES is a sophisticated National Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) developed on the MESSAGE platform, which benefits from its integration with COFFEE, a global IAM developed on the same platform. BLUES played a crucial role in shaping Brazil’s emission trajectory and guiding the analysis of mitigation measures.
