Two PhD positions at the University of Alberta in Integrated Assessment Modelling with GCAM

Applications are invited for two government‐funded PhD positions in integrated assessment modelling. This project will modify GCAM‐Canada with new technologies at the provincial scale, 1) to assess the efficacy of carbon removal and reduction technologies in helping Canada to achieve its net‐zero goals, 2) to improve its representation of building technologies, and 3) to support a science‐driven assessment of alternative net zero pathways.

What is “GCAM”?: The Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) is a large‐scale, state‐of‐the‐art IAM developed by the Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI). GCAM links the global economy with energy supply and demand, agriculture, land use, water, and climate systems in 32 world regions through market‐based mechanisms from the present day through 2100. It has been used by the Canadian and American governments, international institutions such as the IPCC, and multinational corporations to assess net zero and other emissions pathways. GCAM‐Canada builds on the core GCAM model with detailed national data and improved system representations at the provincial scale.

Minimum Qualifications: • A master’s degree in engineering, computing science, or economics.
• Interest in systems thinking and modelling, global change and sustainability.
• Experience in simulation modelling and computer coding.
• A minimum GPA of 3.3 out of 4.0 in the most recent two years of full‐time study.
• Demonstrated English language proficiency through previous training or a recognized English language exam.

Anticipated Remuneration: Approximately $35,000/year.

Start Date: September 2025.
