The Cork University Business School (CUBS) of University College Cork and the SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine research (MaREI), is looking for motivated and talented graduates with outstanding academic records to apply for a PhD Scholarship for a project titled “Energy demand scenarios in a context of degrowth. Investigating opportunities and constraints”. The supervisory team consists of Prof Valeria Andreoni (AIB Professor in Sustainable Business), John Eakins (Senior Lecturer in Economics) and Professor Hannah E. Daly (Professor in Sustainable Energy and Energy Systems Modelling).
The PhD candidate should be interested to model and analyse the impacts and the related opportunities and constraints that degrowth scenarios could have on socio-economic and energy
variables, as well as the impact on greenhouse gas emissions and climate targets. This PhD will complement and integrate a wide range of research and scholarship activities that University College Cork is currently undertaking within the Sustainable Future initiative.
The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated with an ability to work independently and be willing to undertake recommended coursework. Strong quantitative and modelling skills, and good communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential requirements. Applicants should have a good primary degree (First or Second Class Honours) and ideally hold an M.Sc. in an appropriate discipline (Economics, Energy Economics). An understanding of, and interest in, climate mitigation and the energy system is desirable.
