Doctorate in Clean Transport Transition in Developing Countries at ETH Zurich, Switzerland

ETH Zurich’s Energy and Technology Policy Group (EPG) is seeking a doctoral candidate for research on the clean transport transition in developing countries. We are an interdisciplinary research group investigating options for public policy to accelerate the low-carbon transition globally. This position is part of the ETH Future Mobility Research Project ESYN.

Project background

The aim of activities in ESYN is to understand the role of battery electric and synthetic fuel vehicles in decarbonizing passenger road transport (i.e. cars) in developing countries. Specifically, the research will provide valuable insights for decision makers in the public and private sector in understanding the feasibility and attractiveness of commercial scale e-​fuels compared with direct electrification for the transport sector in developing economies in Africa.

Job description

The position’s primary focus will be technical modelling work (i.e. projection modelling), though will also assess and explore the effects of policy interventions on transitional pathways. The successful candidate will interact closely with two other research groups from ETH involved in the project (in the Environmental Systems and the Mechanical Engineering departments) as well as relevant stakeholders and project partners.

Requirements

  • A Master Degree (120 ECTS)
  • Relevant disciplinary fields include, but are not limited to: industrial engineering; energy, mechanical, or electrical engineering; innovation studies,or public policy with a background in science/technology. Interdisciplinary candidates are welcome.
  • A good understanding of energy and particularly transport technologies
  • Coding knowledge (mainly Python)
  • Team-oriented working style
  • Dedicated to scientifically rigorous work that at the same time is relevant to decision makers in the public and private sectors.
  • Proficient English both oral and written – German is a plus but not a core requirement
