The Global Systems Institute (GSI) at the University of Exeter has recently joined the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium. GSI is a research intensive unit focusing on studying the dynamics of change of the earth system and human society, and on finding solutions to sustainability problems. It encompasses scientists and researchers in a large number of fields of enquiry, notably climatology, economics, energy systems, sociology and social systems, mathematics, engineering, biology, human health and political science. The GSI benefits from a close collaboration with the Hadley Centre (at the UK’s Met Office), with a number of dual appointments and shared staff, which enables access to a deep pool of knowledge in climate change science. Many GSI members are and/or have been authors of IPCC. The GSI is involved in a large number of research projects internationally, and takes an active part and leads in some cases programs for generating evidence to support UK climate policy-making (e.g. the UK’s Climate Change Risk Assessment). It is also involved in informing energy and low-carbon innovation policy-making in the UK, at the EU and internationally.
