Center for Global Sustainability, United States
The Center for Global Sustainability (CGS) was founded in 2016 in the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, outside of Washington DC. The mission of CGS is to drive global ambition related to climate, development, and sustainability through a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to research, education, and engagement for policy impact. Current CGS focus areas include subnational climate actions, long-term climate and energy strategies, sustainable finance, the global stocktake, and adaptation and resilience planning. CGS works closely with its sister institution at the University of Maryland, the Global Change Research Institute.
Escuela Politecnica Nacional, Department of Mechanical Engineering (EPN) – Ecuador
EPNis the largest engineering, teaching and research center in Ecuador. Its Scinergy energy research group works with integrated energy planning, energy system design, renewable energy, modelling, simulation, and technology assessment. During the Deep Decarbonisation Pathways Project for Latin America and the Caribbean (DDP-LAC), the IAM called Ecuador Land Use and Energy Network Analysis (ELENA) model was developed in cooperation with the Cenergia Lab from Brazil. Elena model is an application of the MESSAGE platform, and it is being used to evaluate different long-term land-energy system expansion scenarios with more focus in deep decarbonisation transitions. EPN studies on long-term decarbonisation scenarios are considered by the Ministry of Energy, Hydrocarbons and Mines (MERNNR) and Ministry of Environment and Water (MAAE) as inputs to discuss and develop official plans.
Fundación Bariloche (FB) – Argentina
Fundación Bariloche is a private, non-profit academic institution for social sciences research and policy advising. Its objective is to promote postgraduate teaching and scientific research in various areas of economics, energy planning, human and social development, epistemology and philosophy, and the environment. It was created on March 28, 1963, in the city of San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, and since its origins the multidisciplinary work was constant and a distinctive hallmark. The combination of theoretical work, real-world policy advice, multidisciplinarity and complex system’s modelling and representation performed an institution with strong presence in the region during the last decades even despite the political and economical vicissitudes experienced in Argentina in it’s almost 60 years of life.
