HSE and NTNU join the IAMC Consortium

The IAMC Consortium welcomes HSE and NTNU as new Members!

The National Research University “Higher School of Economics” (HSE) was established in 1992 by the Governmental decree with the main goal to advance modern economics education and research in Russia. Consistently ranked as one of Russia’s top universities, today HSE is a leader in Russian education and one of the preeminent economics and social sciences universities in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Having rapidly grown into a well-renowned research university over two decades, HSE sets itself apart with its international presence and cooperation.
Since 1997, the HSE’s Center for Environmental and Natural Resource Economics is involved in modeling and analysis of scenarios of socio-economic development, environmental and climate change impacts. In recent years the Center has been involved in a number of outstanding international research projects, such as Deep Decarbonization Pathways Project (DDPP), CD-LINKS, COMMIT, ENGAGE. The Center plays an important role in analytical support of the domestic and international policy making in climate, environmental, energy, and socio-economic challenges that Russia and the world are facing today. Its future plans include building of the advanced integrated assessment model for Russia, raising capacity of Russian young researchers in application and continuing improvement of the model, use of the model for analytical support of national and international policy makers, specifically on the issues of climate change and sustainable growth.Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a number of research groups that work with modelling of energy , climate and the economy. At the core of energy and climate research at NTNU, is the work on developing long term strategies and pathways for the Norwegian and European energy transition. The use of models is central in this work but also links to the social sciences, in terms of analyzing credible and feasible transition pathways. For a number of years NTNU has worked with these multidisciplinary approaches in addition to modelling challenges like how to deal with dynamics and uncertainty as well as linking of IAM models with sector models from power, heat, transport and industry. Some of NTNUs research interests related to IAM are:

• To participate in and drive forward the development of open modelling platforms for linking IAM models with sector models for energy, transport and industry
• Likewise facilitating joint data and consistent data exchange between these models
• Improve links between sector models, dynamic LCA, CGA and IAM.
• Managing uncertainty and risk in long-term models
• Methods for combining quantitative scenarios studies with social science based storylines into transition pathways
