Dear {{ contact.VORNAME }} {{ contact.NACHNAME }},
The IAMC is pleased to announce that the Scientific Steering Committee has formally established a new Scientific Working Group on the Responsible Use of AI for IAM Research (AI4IAM).
The group is a collaborative platform for community learning, the exchange of best practices, and the development of formal guidance on how AI is integrated into IAM research. Its core aim is to ensure that AI tools are adopted effectively and responsibly, so that the IAMC continues to deliver transparent, robust, and open scientific outputs aligned with long-term climate policy requirements. The SWG also acts as a bridge between the IAMC and the broader AI research ecosystem, ensuring that AI applications remain scientifically accountable and guided by rigorous human oversight.
Work programme. AI4IAM organizes its activities around four work packages:
Responsible AI Usage. AI ethics guidelines for IAM, use protocols, and a community-wide survey on current AI applications.
AI Partnerships. Engagement with Climate Change AI and related communities, climate-focused workshops at major ML venues, and industry pilots.
Community Outreach. Research webinars, hands-on workshops, scenario template updates, and AI-focused sessions at IAMC annual meetings.
State-of-the-Art Review. A rolling use case database, methodology benchmarking, and best practice templates.
Co-chairs.
Haewon McJeon, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)
Yang Ou, Peking University (PKU)
Laurent Drouet, Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC)
The group is supported by an advisory committee including Laura Bahiense (UFRJ), Leon Clarke (ClimateWorks Foundation), Jae Edmonds (JGCRI), Kejun Jiang (HKUST-Guangzhou), Alaa Al Khourdajie (Imperial College London / IIASA), Jennifer Morris (MIT), Joeri Rogelj (Imperial College London / IIASA), and Massimo Tavoni (Polytechnic University of Milan).
How to take part. An expression of interest call will be issued shortly to scope the specific working tasks. To receive that call and future updates from the group, please add your name to the mailing list.
Participation is open to all IAMC members, including those already active in other SWGs. AI4IAM is designed to complement existing SWGs through cross-cutting work on diagnostics, vetting, data harmonization, and scenario validation.
With best regards,
The IAMC Secretariat
